Compost toilets in Portugal
A flush toilet spends drinking water to move a resource somewhere expensive to clean. On rural land with no sewer connection, a well-built compost toilet is not a compromise; it is the simpler system, and it is legal to use on your own property under the usual health rules.
Várzea da Gonçala has run them for years on its Aljezur smallholding, and Folha Verde uses them across a community in the Serra do Açor. Figueirinha Ecoturismo offers them to guests near Odemira, Quinta do Despertar Arcaico built them into a certified permaculture farm, and Eco Construções installs them in bio-construction projects.
