Portugal allocates €3.8m to co-manage protected areas

Portugal's Environmental Fund will invest €3.8 million in the co-management of protected areas during 2026-2027, the Environment and Energy Ministry announced. The funding will strengthen technical teams and support sustainable development projects already outlined in approved co-management plans, including ecological restoration, nature tourism, local product promotion and cultural preservation. A second strand focuses on building technical capacity within the Co-management Commissions overseeing these territories. Minister Maria da Graça Carvalho said government must create the instruments needed to protect and add value to natural heritage, describing the investment as part of a broader shift towards participatory, closer management of protected areas.
