Carpooling and shared mobility in Portugal

In much of rural Portugal the shared car is not an environmental choice but the transport system: the neighbour who drives to the market town on Fridays, the lift arranged in the village café, the car shared between two households because one is enough.

Formalising that is harder than it looks. Car sharing works in Lisbon and Porto, where density and short trips carry the model, and thins out fast beyond them, which is the reverse of where the need is greatest.

If you run a carpooling scheme, a village car share or a shared-mobility cooperative in Portugal, we would like to list it. Dated activities from these projects are listed in our events calendar. Related focuses: public transport advocacy, walkable communities and low-impact travel.
