MUBi is a volunteer-driven Portuguese NGO, founded in 2009, that campaigns for cycling as everyday urban transport. It runs community projects and presses local and national government for safer streets.

MUBi is a non-profit association founded in 2009 to promote the bicycle as everyday transport in Portuguese cities. It is a member of the European Cyclists' Federation. Its work is driven by volunteers, some with long experience in cycling planning and promotion. The association runs several projects. Bike Buddy is a mentoring scheme that accompanies new urban cyclists on their first journeys. Cidade Ciclável is a map of bicycle parking. It makes existing racks visible, rates their quality and marks where more are needed. Sexta de Bicicleta invites people across the country to cycle on the same day each week, to work, university, shops or a café. Rodas de Mudança is a campaign built on portraits of ordinary people who simply chose to cycle, to show that nobody needs to be a superhero to do it. MUBi also acts as a watchdog and advocate. It follows the rollout of public measures such as cycle lanes and links with public transport. In October 2025 it presented the Government and parliamentary parties with a set of 16 proposals for urban mobility. It supports local campaigns too, such as Almirante Reis para Pessoas in Lisbon, which opposes a street redesign that would remove almost 300 trees. In Porto it has commented on the Rua Guerra Junqueiro works and on the city's mobility plan (PMUS). It also calls for enforcement when cars block new cycle lanes. For members and cyclists there is practical help. MUBi offers cycling insurance policies for daily use. Its Dúvidas section explains what to do after a collision, how the Highway Code applies to cyclists and what the benefits of cycling are. The association argues that fewer cars mean less pollution, fewer road casualties and less strain on household budgets, and that this is good for the whole community, not only for people on bikes. It is funded by membership fees and donations.

Our Goal

To improve quality of life in Portuguese cities by making everyday cycling easy, safe and comfortable for anyone who wants to do it.

Our Wishes

MUBi welcomes new members and donations, and relies on volunteers to run its campaigns and projects. It also invites people to join the weekly Sexta de Bicicleta rides and to add and review bike parking in the Cidade Ciclável map.
