S.ENERGIA

S.ENERGIA is the regional energy agency for the municipalities of Barreiro, Moita, Montijo and Alcochete, in the Setúbal peninsula south of Lisbon. It is a non-profit organisation based in Barreiro, and it celebrates 20 years of activity in 2026. The agency helps local authorities shape their energy and climate policies. It also coordinates public bodies and private organisations working on rational energy use and renewables, and it promotes efficient equipment and systems. In 2007–2010 it led a consortium that set up four energy agencies, in Portugal, Malta, Italy and Romania, under the Intelligent Energy Europe programme. Most of its work comes as projects. 2,3+eduLUX plans to replace 47,190 fluorescent tubes in schools with LED tubes. H2OEficiência targets water pumping systems in municipal buildings and public supply, with an expected saving of at least €54,383 a year. Caderneta Energética is a tool for managing and optimising energy use in buildings. ReCAPS and EP-MED deal with climate policy and energy poverty, while Young Energy Leaders and Ecosave work on behaviour and awareness. Residents can visit the Balcão S.ENERGIA +Próximo, a help desk that is part of ADENE's Rede de Espaços Energia. There they can get advice on energy certificates and on how to cut their bills. The agency also offers Menos é Mais, a school competition with an app, and an Escape Room Energia. Its website has pages on energy certification, funding programmes such as the Fundo Ambiental, Fundo Azul and EUCF, and local energy planning. In October 2026, its president, Rui Pedro Pereira, and managing director, Susana Camacho, took part in the EU Covenant of Mayors ceremony in Brussels. The agency also hosted a meeting on decarbonising transport in Moita, with about 100 participants, which opened its 20th-anniversary programme.
