Bicicultura

Bicicultura CRL is a Lisbon-based cooperative working on active mobility since its official founding in 2019. Based at Rua Gomes Freire 161, it brings together specialists in mobility engineering, transport economics, product design, architecture, communication and environmental education to run projects that change how people move around cities. The cooperative operates more than 20 bicycle trains for schoolchildren, including Lisbon's Municipal Bicycle Train Programme and the CicloExpresso project, present in several towns across Portugal, including Braga and Matosinhos. Teams design routes, train local monitors, coordinate with parents and evaluate outcomes. Bicicultura has also built seven parklets in Lisbon through its sParqs project, converting parking spaces into places for people to sit, relax and meet. Other initiatives include Negócios Com Pedalada, which supports cargo-bike microenterprises and lowers barriers to self-employment through cycling, and Veloteca, a 'library of bicycles' for trial or regular use and for educational events. The cooperative also runs Sempre a Rodar, a circular economy project for bicycles, and hosts a regular community gathering called Sexta da Bicicultura along with a podcast, Conversas da Bicicultura. The team combines more than 100 years of collective experience cycling for transport and 60 years of professional experience in active mobility promotion. Members include engineers, researchers, educators, mechanics and communicators, several holding roles in bicycle training standards such as the UK's Bikeability. Ana Pereira, one of the founders, currently serves as Lisbon's Bicycle Mayor through BYCS.
