APREN is Portugal's renewable energy association, founded in 1988, representing over 90% of the country's installed renewable capacity. It tracks sector data, lobbies on policy and shares news on solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, ocean and bioenergy developments.

APREN, the Portuguese Renewable Energy Association, was founded in October 1988 as a non-profit body. Its members include licensed renewable electricity producers and other organisations interested in the technical, legal, financial and economic development of renewable power in Portugal. Together they account for more than 90% of the country's installed renewable capacity. The association covers the full range of renewable sources: wind, solar, hydro, geothermal, ocean and bioenergy. It publishes sector figures on its website, including installed capacity, the share of renewables in electricity production and emissions avoided. As of mid-2026, renewables supplied 75% of electricity production between January and July, with 21.7 GW installed by May 2024. Portugal's National Energy and Climate Plan 2030 (PNEC2030) sets a target of 42 GW. APREN follows and comments on energy legislation, from government decrees to parliamentary resolutions, and reports on emissions avoided, estimated at 10.8 million tonnes of CO2-equivalent for 2025. It organises and takes part in sector events such as the Portugal Energy Storage Forum and the Portugal Renewable Energy Summit, and publishes regular news on storage, grid flexibility and public funding schemes for energy infrastructure. Joaquim Barbosa became President of APREN's board in July 2026, succeeding Pedro Amaral Jorge. The association is headquartered in Lisbon and maintains an active presence on LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram, where it shares sector news, legislative updates and calls for funding applications relevant to renewable energy producers and public entities.

Our Goal

APREN works to coordinate, represent and defend the shared interests of Portugal's renewable energy producers and stakeholders, accelerating the country's transition to a cleaner electricity system.

Our Wishes

The association seeks continued growth of renewable capacity in Portugal, from 21.7 GW installed today towards the 42 GW target set by the National Energy and Climate Plan 2030 (PNEC2030).
