Alentejo certifies 18 sites as climate refuges across five councils

The Alentejo and Ribatejo Regional Tourism Entity has certified 18 sites in five municipalities as climate refuges under the national "Stay Cool" programme, offering visitors controlled temperatures, drinking water and rest areas. The sites are located in Almodôvar, Cuba, Arronches, Castelo de Vide and Mourão. Turismo de Portugal recently opened a one-million-euro funding call, covering up to 80% of eligible costs and a maximum of 75,000 euros per application, for municipalities and parish councils to create or upgrade such refuges. The regional entity says more municipalities are expected to join the network, which aims to boost the region's appeal as a destination during hot summers.
