Topicscultural heritage conservation

The Algarvensis UNESCO Global Geopark, spanning Loulé, Silves and Albufeira, has won the Geoconservation Prize 2026 from Portugal's ProGEO group, shared ex aequo with the municipality of Montemor-o-Novo. The jury praised the consistency and scope of Algarvensis's integrated territorial management strategy for protecting and promoting geological heritage. Three candidacies were submitted, including one from Baião. The award, announced on International Geodiversity Day, follows shortly after Algarvensis gained UNESCO Global Geopark status. A ceremony will be held at a date and location still to be arranged.
