Braga to monitor Borralha mine over river water concerns

Braga's mayor João Rodrigues said the municipality is monitoring plans to reopen the Borralha tungsten mine in Montalegre, aiming to protect the water quality of the Cávado river, which supplies the city. The issue was raised by a Chega councillor citing concerns from water utility Agere. Portugal's environment agency APA gave a favourable opinion in January, subject to conditions and monitoring. Mining company Minerália signed a 15-year concession in 2021 and says it will use only recycled water with no discharges. The project is being legally challenged by the Povo e Natureza do Barroso association over environmental impact concerns.
