Environmental groups demand urgent hiring of nature wardens

The Portuguese Confederation of Environmental Defence Associations (CPADA) has urged the government to urgently hire more nature wardens and reform their career structure. In 2024 the ICNF employed only 286 wardens, far below the 800 recommended by the professional association, leaving each warden responsible for over 2,500 hectares. CPADA says the career has not been reviewed in over 20 years and calls for better pay, equipment, uniforms and career progression to make the profession more attractive. It warns the shortage undermines fire prevention, environmental monitoring and conservation goals, and also asks for more vehicles and equipment for the ICNF.
