European Climate Pact urges Portuguese councils to act on wildfires

Ambassadors of the European Climate Pact in Portugal have appealed to the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities to mobilise local councils to protect populations from the health impacts of wildfires, amid growing exposure to climate-related extreme events. The appeal, marking the European Day for Victims of the Climate Crisis, proposes measures such as identifying vulnerable groups, adding smoke-exposure and evacuation protocols to municipal health plans, and psychosocial support after fires. It will be formally presented on 18 July in Matosinhos, alongside the launch of a guide on wildfires and human health.
