Évora University leads €9m project to trial green hydrogen in Alentejo and Algarve

Topicsrenewable gas

The University of Évora is coordinating H2tALENT, an international project meant to build a hydrogen valley in Alentejo and move green hydrogen from planning into real-world trials. Running from 2024 to 2030, it brings together 29 partners from seven countries and has a €9 million budget funded by the European Commission's Horizon programme. Production would centre on a 15-megawatt electrolyser plant in Sines. Demonstrations include converting municipal fleets in Alandroal, heating Évora's municipal pool with a hydrogen and natural gas blend, and a renewable energy community on Culatra island that stores surplus solar power as hydrogen. Output is projected at over 500 tonnes a year.
