Experts urge urgent action on pampas grass spreading in Portugal

Pampas grass (Cortaderia selloana), an invasive species since 2019, has been recorded in 208 of Portugal's 278 municipalities, making it one of the ten most widespread invasive plants in the country. Researcher Hélia Marchante warns the invasion is already established and spreading fast, damaging native vegetation, wildlife and human health, since the plant is an allergen. September, its flowering period, is critical for control, especially in areas with low presence, where removal is easiest. A national action plan has been awaiting publication by the ICNF since 2023, while citizens are urged to uproot plants, remove plumes and log sightings via the iNaturalist app.
