Government approves new management rules and revised boundaries for Peneda-Gerês National Park

The Portuguese government has approved a new Special Programme for Peneda-Gerês National Park, updating its management rules and redrawing its geographical boundaries. The aim is to balance nature conservation with the needs of residents, local councils and traditional economic activities. Procedures are simplified for maintaining existing paths and for installing fire surveillance and fighting infrastructure, including water points. Traditional farming, grazing and forestry can continue, and nature tourism is promoted. Motorhome service areas are banned outside campsites, though the government wants organised parking solutions agreed with municipalities. Coordination between the nature conservation agency ICNF, councils and other bodies is also strengthened.
