Government to redraw Modernisation Fund priorities towards electric vehicles and heavy freight
The government is drawing up a new strategy for spending Portugal's share of the EU Modernisation Fund up to 2030. Priorities include support for buying electric vehicles, decarbonising heavy road freight, expanding charging points and cutting natural gas use in energy-intensive industry. The Climate Agency must submit a proposal on the funding priorities by 31 December, on the instruction of Environment and Energy Minister Maria da Graça Carvalho. It will then identify areas for bids to the fund's Investment Committee in 2027. National coordination of the fund is also moving from the energy and geology directorate to the Climate Agency by the end of 2026.
