JPP party discusses light pollution study with SPEA in Madeira

Madeira's JPP parliamentary group met with the regional delegation of SPEA (Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds) to discuss growing concerns over light pollution's impact on the archipelago's biodiversity. SPEA presented findings and practical progress from a project already running in several municipalities to reduce excessive artificial night lighting, warning of serious effects on local fauna, particularly endemic seabirds. The organisation called for municipal Public Lighting Master Plans limiting light directed skyward and setting curfews for unnecessary lighting. JPP acknowledged the mutual benefits for the environment, public health and local finances, and pledged to review the data ahead of possible legislative action.
