Leiria unveils 74-measure plan to overhaul urban mobility

Leiria has drawn up a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (PMUS) to be rolled out over the next decade, aiming to cut car use from 80% to 58% of trips by 2035. The plan favours walking and cycling and proposes organising neighbourhoods into "super-blocks", with traffic confined to their perimeter and interiors reserved mainly for pedestrians and cyclists. To achieve the shift, it targets doubling public transport use from 7% to 14%, raising cycling from 1% to 8%, and walking from 11% to 19% of commuting trips.
