Madeira council debates longevity economy and energy transition challenges

Madeira's Economic Advisory Council held a meeting on longevity and energy issues. Businessman António Trindade presented the 'Madeira Longevity & Living' project, proposing the island as a hub for healthy ageing, prevention and investment, based on stays over 21 days. EEM's João Pedro Sousa said Madeira reached the EU's 55% renewable energy target in the first quarter of 2025, though seasonality and limited solar capacity remain challenges. CLCM's José Gilberto Figueira addressed fuel supply security, noting Caniçal's reserves cover 30-60 days of consumption, and called for clearer rules on the islands' role in national emergency response mechanisms.
