Maia food waste collection to expand to 25,000 homes

Topicsfood waste reduction

Maiambiente is expanding selective food waste collection in Maia to cover more than 25,000 households, adding door-to-door collection for over 19,000 homes and 83 new street container points for around 6,300 more. Currently collection reaches about 55% of the municipality, and the goal is to recover 70% of biowaste potential by 2030. The move accompanies a national context where 1.82 million tonnes of food were wasted in Portugal in 2024. An awareness campaign starts today, with door-to-door outreach from the week of 12 October.
