Old Lidl shopping trolleys turned into seahorse shelters in Tagus

WWF Portugal, backed by Lidl Portugal and MARDIVE, has installed nine underwater shelters made from repurposed Lidl shopping trolleys in the Tagus Estuary, off Trafaria, part of the D-EVOLUÇÃO ecological restoration project. The area hosts one of Portugal's densest seahorse populations, including the short-snouted and long-snouted species, which had been losing habitat as accumulated waste used for shelter is removed. Trolleys were stripped of plastic parts, treated against corrosion and fitted with fixing points before being sunk. Lidl financed 90,000 euros covering roughly 16 hectares, partly through sales of a reusable turtle-branded bag, with locations agreed with local fishermen.
