Portugal launches €40 million aid package for farmers

Portugal's government approved a new €40 million support package for farmers facing rising fertiliser and energy costs, worsened by the Middle East crisis. This adds to an earlier €20 million extraordinary payment already fully disbursed in July. Fuel subsidies for agricultural diesel have also been extended, with an additional €15 million for the second half of 2026. Agriculture Minister José Manuel Fernandes said payments are being brought forward, with €207.5 million due in September. Total support paid by the ministry in 2026 is expected to exceed €1 billion by September, a record for the period.
