Portugal pledges €75 million for ocean observation alliance

Prime Minister Luís Montenegro announced Portugal will contribute €75 million to a European-backed initiative supporting ocean observation, at the OceanEye alliance meeting held on 23 September in New York, on the margins of the UN General Assembly. The gathering, promoted by Ursula von der Leyen and Mark Carney with UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission and the World Meteorological Organisation, brought together government leaders to discuss ocean protection. The funds will support the Global Ocean Observing System. Montenegro said the reinforced alliance needs adequate governance and sustainable financing, and described Portugal, with its large Exclusive Economic Zone and marine protected areas, as a leader in global ocean action.
