Portugal updates national biodiversity strategy through 2030

The Portuguese government has approved a revised National Strategy for Nature Conservation and Biodiversity 2030, aligning it with recent EU and international targets, including the Kunming-Montreal framework and the EU nature restoration regulation. The strategy is built around four pillars: ecosystem conservation and restoration, sustainable land management, economic and social valuation of biodiversity, and governance and knowledge. Measures include protecting 30% of land and sea areas, cutting hazardous pesticide use by half, and creating payment schemes for ecosystem services. Implementation falls to the ICNF, with execution dependent on public budget availability across ministries.
