Portuguese bird group asks public to report window collisions
SPEA-BirdLife is asking citizens to report birds killed or injured after colliding with glass surfaces, as thousands of birds cross Portugal during autumn migration. A 2024 SPEA study found that 82% of recorded collisions are fatal. The organisation has an online form to log incidents, helping identify affected species and dangerous locations such as glazed buildings, acoustic barriers and domestic windows. It wants this data to pressure authorities and developers into adopting preventive measures, including planning against reflective surfaces near rivers, wetlands and parks, and using visible films on unavoidable glass.
