Quercus flags new eucalyptus plantings in fire-hit Águeda

Quercus's Aveiro branch has received repeated reports of new eucalyptus plantations in fire-prone areas of Águeda municipality, including near homes, water lines and roads. One case involves land replanted next to a house already damaged by a September 2024 fire, authorised by ICNF despite suspected incompatibility with municipal planning rules. Quercus warns such plantings raise fire risk and can block evacuation routes, recalling Pedrógão Grande. It also says the council's post-2024 promises to remove eucalyptus stumps and support native replanting remain largely unfulfilled, and is demanding urgent review of authorisations and enforcement.
