Quercus opposes Alenquer biomethane plant over environmental risks

Environmental group Quercus has issued a negative opinion on a proposed biomethane plant in Abrigada, Alenquer, whose public consultation closed on 15 September. The facility would process about 230 tonnes of agricultural and agro-industrial waste daily, affecting local watercourses and using over 20,000 m³ of public water yearly. Quercus criticised the lack of a plan for applying 87,075 tonnes of digestate annually, warning of nitrate leaching and groundwater contamination, and raised concerns over odours, air quality, noise and heavy traffic. It is the second project by developer Gás da Terra to face public and municipal opposition in under three months, after a similar case in Torres Novas.
