Rehabilitated leatherback turtle tracked swimming to Canary Islands

A study published in Chelonian Conservation and Biology details the rescue of Quinas, an adult leatherback turtle weighing around 300kg found entangled in fishing gear off the Algarve coast in June 2019. Zoomarine Algarve's Porto d'Abrigo team treated the animal for 48 days before releasing it with a satellite tracker. It then swam 1,283km towards the Canary Islands in 20 days, confirming normal migratory behaviour. The team is now applying lessons from the case to a second turtle, Molly, currently under rehabilitation after arriving from Ireland.
