Renewables supply 62% of Portugal's electricity over ten months as imports hit record share
Renewable sources met 62% of Portugal's electricity demand in the first ten months of 2026, according to grid operator REN. Hydro and wind each supplied 22%, solar 13% (up 10% year on year) and biomass 5%, while natural gas generation accounted for 14%. Net imports covered 24% of supply, the highest ever for this period. Consumption rose 3% over the period. October was weaker for renewables, at 47%, because hydro and wind conditions were well below average, with imports meeting 40% of demand. Gas consumption fell 20.5% in October, and Portugal exported the equivalent of two-thirds of its gas use to Spain.
