Rewilding Portugal releases first wild rabbits in Côa valley

Rewilding Portugal has carried out its first reintroduction of wild rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus algirus) in a rewilding area, releasing 17 animals into three predator-proof enclosures at Ermo das Águias, part of the Grande Vale do Côa. The action, under the LIFE LUPI LYNX project, aims to rebuild prey populations needed for the eventual return of Iberian wolves and lynx. The rabbit is a key prey species for over 20 predators. A breeding enclosure and partnerships with municipalities and hunting associations support further releases, with another reinforcement planned at Paul de Toirões and monitoring continuing at Ermo das Águias.
