Swift and swallow project Andorin joins forces with SPEA-Birdlife

The Andorin project, launched in October 2022 by association Vita Nativa to study and protect Portugal's swallow and swift species, has signed a cooperation agreement with SPEA-Birdlife. The partnership aims to widen its reach and avoid duplicated efforts in responding to reports and requests for help. Coordinator Vasco Flores Cruz says Portugal lacks protected nesting sites, particularly for swifts, whose hidden nests are often destroyed during building works. Since 2023, citizen-science volunteers have logged around 3,500 buildings with an estimated 43,000 nests, and the project backs Porto's first building renovation designed with integrated nesting solutions.
