Two Serra da Estrela villages start community biodiversity inventory

Topicsbiodiversity conservationcitizen science and participation

The Associação Veredas da Estrela, with CERVAS and Estrela Geopark, is launching a participatory biodiversity inventory for Figueiró and Freixo da Serra, two mountain villages in Gouveia. Two free field outings, on 31 July and 8 August, will invite residents and visitors to observe bats, nocturnal birds and stream invertebrates, recording findings on the iNaturalist citizen-science platform. The initiative builds on a 2025 survey and is meant to grow into a long-term, community-built record of local species. It forms part of the cross-border De Monte a Monte project on ecological restoration, co-funded by Erasmus+.
