Valongo council seeks environmental review after landfill fire

The Valongo council has asked Portugal's Environment Agency (APA) to urgently assess environmental conditions at the Recivalongo landfill in Sobrado following a fire on Sunday. The council wants to know whether the blaze damaged systems preventing soil and groundwater contamination, caused leachate infiltration, or produced runoff from firefighting water. It also seeks air quality checks linked to burning waste and confirmation that the site still meets its environmental licence requirements. With the current operating licence due to expire in December 2026, the council says any renewal must rest on clear proof of safety and compliance. Recivalongo could not be reached for comment.
