WWF flags progress in Portugal but warns of climate losses of €17.7bn

WWF Portugal's summary of the 2026 Living Planet Report highlights positive signs in nature recovery, including the return of the Iberian lynx and rebounding bluefin tuna and sardine populations, alongside progress in renewables, which made up 36.5% of final energy consumption in 2024. However, it warns of persistent reliance on fossil fuels in transport, energy poverty, grid limitations and a food system that still favours high-impact production. Between 1980 and 2024, extreme weather caused an estimated €17.7 billion in economic losses in Portugal. WWF says upcoming UN biodiversity and climate summits must turn commitments into action.
