Zoomarine releases six rehabilitated loggerhead turtles into ocean

Zoomarine Algarve's Porto d'Abrigo released six juvenile loggerhead turtles into the Atlantic on 11 June, following months of veterinary treatment. Named Xena, Xerém, Xerazade, Xénia, Xamã and Frankie, the animals were found stranded or injured at various points along the Portuguese coast, with one, Frankie, transferred from Ireland. The operation was carried out aboard the Portuguese Navy vessel NRP Oríon, around 6 nautical miles off Portimão, away from heavy fishing areas. Before release, the turtles were fitted with microchips and satellite transmitters, part of a partnership with the Upwell organisation, to track their migration and habitat use.
