Tavira court orders quarry to close immediately
A court in Tavira has ordered the immediate closure of the Cerro do Meio quarry, ruling it violated the rights of residents in the parish union of Luz de Tavira and Santa Estêvão. The quarry, run by Miner Blanc Lda, part of Grupo Verdasca, resumed operations last year after 12 years of inactivity, prompting a surge in complaints about noise, vibrations and air quality. Grupo Verdasca is separately under investigation by the PJ judicial police over suspected environmental crimes and corruption. The court set a fine of €2,000 per day if the quarry fails to halt activity.
