Cycling Infrastructure

Portugal is hillier than the Netherlands and sunnier than anywhere that cycles well, and the infrastructure is only now catching up. Azeitão Eco-consciente organises the community version near Setúbal.

Cycling in Portugal

Cycling here has grown from the bottom up: bike lanes arrived late, the ecovias were built for tourists, and most of the everyday riding happens on roads that were never designed for it. The terrain gets blamed more than it deserves, the electric bike has quietly answered most of that argument.

Azeitão Eco-consciente organises the community side near Setúbal, including the Fancy Azeitão ride and the walks and garden gatherings around it. That combination is the point: the infrastructure follows the people who already ride, not the other way round.

If you work on cycling infrastructure or run a bike collective in Portugal, we would like to list it. See also walkable communities and public transport. Dated activities from these projects are listed in our events calendar.
