Drought resilience in Portugal
Drought here is no longer an event to wait out; the south is drying structurally, and the practical question on most land is how to keep producing with less water rather than how to survive one bad year.
Herdade Monte Silveira farms several hundred hectares in the Beira Baixa on that basis. Slow Water Earth redesigns water flow for landowners across southern Europe. Orchard of Flavours keeps drought-tolerant fruit varieties near Tavira, and Environmental Waves works on reuse and treatment technology.
The answers are mostly unglamorous: more shade, more organic matter, species that belong here, and irrigation designed for the year you fear rather than the year you had.
