Herbalism in Portugal

Portuguese country medicine never entirely disappeared; it retreated into kitchens and into the knowledge of people who knew which hillside had what. The projects here are picking that up again, with the Mediterranean flora (rockrose, carob, thyme, elder, hypericum) that grows without being asked.

Ceratonia Gardens runs a herbal centre near São Bartolomeu de Messines, founded by a medical herbalist. Idanha-à-Vida works at landscape scale around Idanha-a-Velha. Vale do Rodrigo grows and processes on a small permaculture farm, Mushroom Compadres makes tinctures in the western Algarve, and Pé Descalço teaches traditional plant use near Porto de Mós.

Most of them teach as well as sell, which is the better reason to visit. See also natural medicine, seed saving and exchange and foraging and wild foods. Dated activities from these projects are listed in our events calendar.
