Alentejo waste firm cuts landfill share to 15%

Resialentejo, which manages waste in Baixo Alentejo, has cut the share of urban waste sent to landfill from 94% in 2012 to 15% in 2026, nearing the EU's 10% target for 2030. The company now sends 65% of treated waste for recycling, above the EU's 63% goal set for 2030. A new landfill is under construction to serve its eight municipalities, as the current site has about two years of capacity left. Resialentejo is also studying whether it could offer spare capacity at the new facility to other regional waste management systems facing shortages nationally.
