Algarve citrus growers see season squeezed by costs and imports

Algarve citrus producers are closing the 2025/26 season, ending September 30, with weaker returns than expected, according to Algarorange, which represents growers. Output is estimated at around 320,000 tonnes, similar to last year, but rising fuel costs have pushed up production expenses and left consumers with less spending power. The association also blames a surge in imports from Egypt and South Africa, redirected to Europe after struggles selling in Middle Eastern markets, which has driven prices down. Algarorange is urging consumers to check fruit origin and calling on authorities to better regulate imports to protect domestic producers, who face stricter EU rules.
