Algarve presses for Faro–Seville railway by 2040 and a Guadiana bridge
The Algarve's regional development commission, CCDR Algarve, used a Portugal–Spain cross-border cooperation meeting in Tordesillas to push three priorities with Andalusia: a Faro–Huelva–Seville rail link by 2040, the Alcoutim–Sanlúcar de Guadiana bridge, and joint management of the Guadiana's water. No direct rail service currently links the Algarve and Andalusia, so travellers depend on roads. The bridge already has about €14 million in recovery funding and finished Portuguese studies, but Spanish environmental concerns and a pending bilateral approval have held it up. The CCDR says the railway still needs further technical studies and closer coordination between both countries.
