Almada water utility seeks over €4.5m in EU funds for supply upgrades

Topicswater scarcity

Almada's municipal water and sanitation services (SMAS) have applied to the Sustentável 2030 programme, under Portugal 2030, for projects worth more than €4.5 million. The works cover three supply zones: a new underground abstraction point near the Corroios salt marsh, two new boreholes and a larger Lazarim reservoir in the Costa da Caparica and Sobreda area, and upgraded disinfection, remote-management equipment and a reservoir repair in Charneca de Caparica and Aroeira. The aim is to diversify water sources, increase storage and cope better with peak demand, emergencies and extreme weather. A funding decision is still pending.
