Avis children to get olive oil from their own tree until age 18

A project in Avis will plant an olive tree for each of about 40 children, who will receive the oil produced by their tree every year until they turn 18. The initiative stems from an agreement between young agronomist João Varela and the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Avis, aimed at connecting rural children with local farming traditions. Each tree yields roughly one litre of oil per harvest, with full production expected within three years, meaning around 150 litres a year once underway. Children will also visit the olive groves annually to follow pruning, flowering and harvest.
