Big energy users demand €100m to offset CO2 costs

The Portuguese association of large electricity consumers (APIGCEE) warned that a scheme compensating industry for CO2 emission costs passed on to electricity prices is underfunded. The current 2025 call opened with €30 million, a 40% cut from 2025's €50 million, despite an expanded list of eligible sectors. The Environment Minister had pledged to raise the fund to €100 million this year following EU approval, but this has not been formalised. APIGCEE compared Portugal unfavourably to Spain, France and Germany, which offer far higher support relative to GDP, and warned the payout ratio to companies could fall to about 49.5% this year.
