Estate claims ownership of five Arrábida beaches in court

Herdade da Comenda has sued the Portuguese state and the environment agency APA, claiming private ownership of five beaches near Setúbal, citing an 1852 royal sale deed and an 1864 decree by King Luís I. Both the Public Prosecutor's office and APA contest the claim, arguing beaches form part of the public maritime domain and that an unfinished 1988 administrative boundary process must conclude first. Officials also dispute the visibility of old boundary markers cited by the estate. The dispute may ultimately hinge on which tide line legally defines the riverbank.
