Gaia deputy mayor proposes metropolitan waste body south of Douro

Vila Nova de Gaia's deputy mayor, Firmino Pereira, has called for a metropolitan entity to coordinate urban waste management in municipalities south of the Douro river, including some in the Aveiro district. Speaking at a public council meeting, he said Gaia should take the lead in bringing municipalities together, noting that north of the river, Lipor already handles waste for eight councils. He described waste disposal problems in parts of Aveiro district as "dramatic" and, citing EU targets limiting landfill use to 10% by 2030, backed building an incinerator south of the Douro.
