LIPOR is the inter-municipal association responsible for sustainable waste management across the Greater Porto region, operating recycling, composting, organic valorisation, and energy recovery facilities. It also runs an education academy and community sustainability programmes.
LIPOR — Associação de Municípios para Gestão Sustentável de Resíduos do Grande Porto — is an inter-municipal association dedicated to the sustainable management of urban waste produced by the municipalities of the Greater Porto area. Operating across multiple poles, LIPOR runs a comprehensive infrastructure that includes an Organic Valorisation Centre, a Sorting Centre, Recycling Platforms, an Ecocentre, a Biogas Valorisation Plant, and a Photovoltaic Power Station at its Baguim do Monte/Ermesinde headquarters. At its Maia pole (LIPOR II), the association operates Energy Valorisation units and a Sanitary Landfill.
Beyond waste processing, LIPOR places a strong emphasis on education and community engagement. The Academia LIPOR offers a wide range of training programmes for individuals and organisations, while the Casa do Corim serves as a multifunctional Sustainability Hub hosting events, workshops, and meetings. LIPOR also promotes home recycling through wall-mounted ecopoints and a door-to-door collection service for goods in good condition.
The organisation is actively involved in environmental education initiatives, including community garden projects (Horta da Formiga), ecological trails, and an adventure park. It publishes annual Sustainable Development Goals reports, engages citizens as Community Trainers, and hosts the country's largest energy community. LIPOR's work exemplifies an integrated approach to the circular economy, combining waste reduction, recycling, energy recovery, and environmental awareness to build a more sustainable Greater Porto.
Our Goal
LIPOR aims to transform urban waste into new resources through innovative and circular practices, promoting sustainable waste management across the Greater Porto region. It seeks to build a more sustainable future by combining recycling, composting, organic valorisation, energy recovery, and environmental education.
Our Wishes
LIPOR welcomes citizens to become Community Trainers, engage with its sustainability programmes, and participate in community garden, ecological trail, and education initiatives. Partnerships with municipalities, organisations, and individuals committed to circular economy principles are encouraged.
