LIPOR is the inter-municipal association responsible for sustainable waste management in Greater Porto. It operates recycling, composting, organic valorisation and energy recovery facilities, and runs an education academy and community sustainability programmes.
LIPOR, the Associação de Municípios para Gestão Sustentável de Resíduos do Grande Porto, is the inter-municipal association responsible for the sustainable management of urban waste produced by the municipalities of Greater Porto. It works across several poles. Its infrastructure includes an Organic Valorisation Centre, a Sorting Centre, Recycling Platforms, an Ecocentre, a Biogas Valorisation Plant and a Photovoltaic Power Station at its Baguim do Monte/Ermesinde headquarters. At the Maia pole, known as LIPOR II, it runs Energy Valorisation units and a Sanitary Landfill.
LIPOR puts a strong emphasis on education and community engagement. Academia LIPOR offers a range of training programmes for individuals and organisations. Casa do Corim is a multifunctional Sustainability Hub that hosts events, workshops and meetings. To promote recycling at home, LIPOR offers wall-mounted ecopoints and a door-to-door collection service for goods in good condition.
Its environmental education work includes community garden projects (Horta da Formiga), ecological trails and an adventure park. LIPOR engages citizens as Community Trainers and publishes annual reports on the Sustainable Development Goals. It also hosts the largest energy community in Portugal. Its work combines waste reduction, recycling, energy recovery and environmental awareness.

LIPOR wants to turn urban waste into new resources through innovative, circular practices and to promote sustainable waste management across Greater Porto. It works towards a more sustainable future by combining recycling, composting, organic valorisation, energy recovery and environmental education.
Our Wishes
LIPOR invites citizens to become Community Trainers, to get involved in its sustainability programmes and to take part in its community garden, ecological trail and education initiatives. It also encourages partnerships with municipalities, organisations and individuals committed to circular economy principles.
