Sugo Cork Rugs
Founded in 2017 by textile designer Susana Godinho, Sugo Cork Rugs handweaves bespoke rugs from cork in Espargo, Portugal, combining traditional weaving with renewable materials. The rugs provide thermal and acoustic insulation.
Sugo Cork Rugs makes handwoven rugs from cork, combined with Portuguese wool and recovered cotton. Textile designer Susana Godinho launched the brand in 2017. She wanted to return to the origins and tradition of weaving, and to work with the properties of cork, one of Portugal's best-known and most sustainable natural resources. The brand is based at Parque Industrial Lusopark in Espargo, Santa Maria da Feira.
The production method is patent-pending. The cotton is recovered from large industrial productions, which reduces the brand's environmental impact and follows circular economy principles. Cork is harvested from cork oaks without harming the tree, and it's renewable and recyclable.
The rugs come in a wide variety of patterns, colours and textures, suitable for any interior. They provide thermal and acoustic insulation, are comfortable underfoot and are anti-allergenic.
Every rug is made entirely by hand in Portugal, so each piece is unique, and the work supports traditional artisan skills. The brand also makes bespoke rugs to individual preferences, for architects, interior designers and anyone looking for sustainable luxury at home.
Sugo has presented its collections at international design events, including the Saint-Étienne Design Biennale in France. It has also worked with curators and creative professionals across Europe. Its tagline is “Feel Your Feet”.
