Porto-area waste body says recycling must grow to meet 2030 targets

Topicswaste collectionrecycling targets

LIPOR, the waste management body serving municipalities around Porto, received roughly 23,000 tonnes of glass, 26,000 tonnes of paper and cardboard, over 18,000 tonnes of plastic and metal, and more than 58,000 tonnes of food and garden waste in 2025. Its chairman says that, despite committed residents and councils, the figures still fall short of what the 2030 targets will demand. He points to materials still going into general waste, especially food waste, as the biggest room for growth. Meeting the goals, he argues, requires bringing in people who do not yet recycle consistently, cleaner sorting at source, and continued investment in collection systems.
